Using Sociology in the Workplace

John Kaluza

My education in the field of sociology always has been, and continues to be, very beneficial to my career. As a sales representative for a worldwide leader in hearing aid technology, I use a variety of human relations skills on a daily basis. These skills were fostered in my sociology classes. For example, classroom exercises in the Applied Sociology program helped me to develop the interpersonal skills that I use every day over the phone and in person. I work with diverse populations, ranging from hearing impaired seniors to highly specialized doctors. My education in sociology has made me more sensitive to the unique characteristics of each demographic group that I work with.

My work involves research with procedures and techniques. Without my background in sociology I would have a more difficult time comprehending complex patterns of facts and figures. My ability to recognize relationships and social structures within companies helps me to gain valuable information that benefits my organization. The SCSU Applied Sociology program has provided me with the foundation to foster relationships on a micro level, as well as to fit these relationships into a larger global awareness of people with disabilities.

Overall, the Applied Sociology Program at SCSU provided me with a well-rounded education that allows me to apply skills learned in the classroom to my everyday work experience.
